Description
Enjoy a full day exploring Dunedin, New Zealand's oldest city boasting a fascinating history, and the surrounding rugged but stunning Otago Peninsula. Bound by breathtaking sandy beaches and rugged coastlines the Otago Peninsula is home to a multitude of rare wildlife such as the Yellow-Eyed Penguin. Begin by viewing the city's finest hotspots before embarking on an adventure to the more remote areas of the Otago Peninsula.
Dunedin is home to some of New Zealand's oldest architecture. Start by viewing these impressive Edwardian and Victorian structures which attract much attention and play an important part in Dunedin's historical facade. Next, visit Baldwin Street, the steepest street in the world, followed by the iconic University of Otago and Historic Dunedin Railway Station.
Journey out onto the Otago Peninsula and be engulfed by the sheer beauty and ruggedness of the coastline, habitat to unique wildlife throughout the year. Visit Larnach Castle gardens, an impressive estate and vantage point of the Otago Harbour. Here you will have time to purchase lunch from the Ballroom Cafe should you wish to. Carry on through Tidal Inlets to Portobello, Otago Peninsula's main township.
Spend the afternoon admiring the treasured Yellow-Eyed Penguin and other unique native wildlife including Little Blue penguins, NZ Sea-lions and NZ fur-seals, regularly spotted ashore. Make the most of this experience with a penguin tour encompassing 90 steps and a 600m trek over 90 minutes. Make sure you have your camera handy for many photographic opportunities.
The final stop is Taiaroa Head, home to many a Northern Royal Albatross. Keep your eyes peeled for these magnificent creatures gliding around the headland as you hear about their traits. Once you've ingested enough sea air you will begin your journey back to Port Chalmers and Dunedin via the low road.
