Celebrate the vision of Austrian artist, ecologist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser at this colourful art centre, gifted to the people of Whangarei and nestled in the scenic Town Basin beside the Hatea River. More than a gallery, it tells a story of community, creativity, urban nature and sustainable living. Inside is the largest collection of Hundertwasser’s works outside Vienna, from paintings and original graphic art to hand-knotted rugs and architectural projects.
Up on the Afforested Roof, you’ll wander among living examples of his belief that architecture should sit in harmony with nature, including one of the world’s rarest plants. Climb to the Golden Cupola for sweeping 360-degree views across Whangarei, then step inside the Wairau Māori Art Gallery, New Zealand’s only public gallery dedicated to contemporary Māori art. With full-day entry, there’s plenty of time to take it all in, making this a rewarding stop on any Northland journey.
