What you can expect

Discover the untamed beauty of Dunedin's Otago Peninsula on the Peninsula Encounter Tour with Monarch Wildlife Cruises & Tours. This small group bus tour includes postcard views of the harbour as well as stopping at a remote Otago Peninsula beach, the Royal Albatross Centre (not including the observatory room) and the Yellow-eyed Penguin conservation reserve. Informative and fascinating driver commentary included throughout!

To start your tour, step aboard a comfortable mini-bus and journey along the Otago Peninsula's high road, treating your eyes to sweeping views of the harbor and the rugged coastline. Your knowledgeable guide will regale you with tales of history, local wildlife and intriguing facts about the area, enhancing your experience.

Throughout the drive, keep an eye out for a variety of birds, such as pukeko, kingfishers, swans, godwits, and more. If you're a wildlife lover, this tour is for you! You will then pause at a remove peninsula beach so that the photographers and nature enthusiasts among you can revel in the dramatic cliffs and nearby islands. Look around for charismatic sea lions that often inhabit the sandy shores, an unforgettable sight.

Continuing your Dunedin wildlife tour, the Royal Albatross Centre beckons with its informative displays and a cliff-edge boardwalk that overlooks Pilots Beach. Please note this tour does not include entry to the observatory room at the Royal Albatross Centre.

The Peninsula Encounter tour then ventures on further to a conservation reserve, a haven for Yellow-eyed Penguins. Embark on a guided walk through native bushland, where you can access secluded viewing spots for an exciting glimpse of the world's rarest penguin species.

As the day comes to an end, sit back and relax on the return bus journey back to Dunedin, while the sun sets over the Otago Harbor. A medley of history, breathtaking landscapes and enchanting wildlife, the Monarch Peninsula Encounter truly captures the essence of Dunedin's Otago Peninsula.
