Exploring Lake Wanaka, New Zealand

By Charli · June 2014

Nestled in the heart of a glacier carved basin amid snow-capped peaks is the town of Wanaka. The world’s first lifestyle reserve it offers visitors and residents the freedom to explore the surrounding region on their own terms.

Known for the vast lake that reaches out from the centre of the town, Wanaka is the ideal place to visit if you like outdoors adventures and lazy afternoons by the water. While many opt to make camp in neighbouring Queenstown I urge you to consider basing yourself away from the tourism driven adventure capital of the south, and instead spend your time getting to know the real middle earth.

With the town of Wanaka encompassing only a small fraction of the lake’s edge, there’s miles of unfettered shoreline left to explore.

Join the crew of Wanaka Kayak & Sail for a guided trip on the water, or rent a kayak from their base on the beach and set off in search of adventure. On a still day the lake transforms into a mirror reflecting the alpine peaks and vibrant shores it provides picture perfect views a plenty..
