Queenstown Airport sits just seven minutes from town, but where you go next depends on your itinerary. Renting a car makes sense if Wanaka, Glenorchy or the Milford Road are on your list, and Evolve Rentals Car Hire delivers door to door so you can be behind the wheel within minutes of landing. If driving is not your thing, shuttles and private transfers run daily between the airport, central Queenstown and outlying accommodation in Frankton, Arthurs Point and Fernhill.

Getting to Milford Sound is the transport question most visitors ask first. A return drive takes around four and a half hours each way on a narrow alpine road, so most people book a coach transfer instead, sitting back for the Te Anau and Homer Tunnel stretch while a local driver handles the tricky bits. If you have already done the road trip in, the Milford Sound Fly Back gets you home in a 40 minute scenic flight instead, with a complimentary shuttle waiting to take you from the airport back to your accommodation.

Around town, walking covers most of the central waterfront, restaurants and the Skyline Gondola base, though a hop on hop off bus links the CBD with Queenstown Gardens, Fernhill and Sunshine Bay for those staying further out. For an afternoon around Gibbston Valley without worrying about a designated driver, the Wine Hopper Bus runs an hourly circuit between the wineries and back into town.

For day trips to Wanaka, Cardrona or Glenorchy, self drive gives the most flexibility, with all three within 90 minutes and worth the drive on their own merits. Ski season adds dedicated shuttles running to Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Cardrona Alpine Resort from central pick up points each morning, saving the hassle of chains and alpine roads in a rental car.

Whichever way you are moving through the region, book transport early in peak summer and winter months, Queenstown's roads and shuttles fill up fast when the whole town is heading the same direction at once.
