What you can expect

Head out from Te Anau on a half day run deep into Southland, to the Mavora Lakes in Fiordland National Park. Your guide points out the ground where the Breaking of the Fellowship was filmed, the stretch that stood in for the edge of Fangorn Forest, and the spot where one actor broke two toes during the shoot.

Photos with the authentic licensed replica props come with the day, as do copies of the original scripts and production call sheets. From November to March, the longer daylight stretches the route out to Manapouri and Te Anau for the Anduin River and the Dead Marshes. Fiordland weather can turn fast, with snow and rain both on the cards, so pack a layer you can pull on at the lakes.
