What you can expect

Step back into the 1860s on The Goldrush Tour, a small-group Skippers Canyon tour from Queenstown that follows the same route travelled by early miners. This half-day experience combines stunning alpine scenery with the stories of the Otago gold rush, brought to life through GPS-activated narration at key points of the road, as you travel along the historic Skippers Canyon Road.

Departing from central Queenstown, the tour takes you through the Queenstown Gorge (including Blow Ho Gully) before entering Skippers Canyon, one of New Zealand’s most remarkable historic areas. Take in the majestic landscape as the professionally recorded stories play, with narration available in English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Spanish, while your driver-guide focuses on navigating the dramatic alpine road. Multiple onboard audio channels are available, including music and dedicated children’s storytelling tracks.

Enjoy photo stops along the way, including filming locations featured in The Lord of the Rings, as well as other TV shows and blockbusters. The tour finishes at Gantley’s Tavern, a historic goldmining pub dating back over 160 years, where you can enjoy a hot drink or a beer/wine (included in the price) before returning to Queenstown.

With a duration of approximately 3.5 to 4 hours, plus convenient pickup points in town, The Goldrush Tour is a unique and immersive way to explore Queenstown’s famous Skippers Canyon and its rich heritage.
