Cruise Lake Wakatipu aboard the Earnslaw, a coal fired steamship now 106 years old, on a 90 minute run out from Queenstown's Steamer Wharf and the opening act of a six hour day. The afternoon belongs to Gibbston, where a local wine guide takes you through tastings at three of the region's wineries, including the Cave at Gibbston Valley.
A cheese platter, a glass of premium wine, and group numbers capped at 15 all come as standard, so you are never tasting over someone's shoulder. Eat before you board the bus at 1.20pm, because tastings start at 1.30pm and the next thing on offer is cheese. You are dropped back at your central Queenstown accommodation at about 5pm, the lake behind you and the vines still on your palate.
