On the Hell's Gate Mud Bath & Spa package, you will relax in the Hells Gate Mud Bath, New Zealand's only mud spa complex, and enjoy the Sulphur Spa for the ultimate relaxation. Naturally heated, these sulphur spas are renowned for their healing and restorative powers.
With the only geothermal mud baths in New Zealand, the Hell’s Gate Spa is a highly therapeutic experience. Experience how the nutrient rich water relaxes the body and our world famous mud gently exfoliates the skin while enjoying the views of the Geothermal Reserve. Relax in the warm geothermal mud before jumping in the sulphur pool – with minerals that help to clear and detoxify. This Maori owned valley is both beautiful and bizarre, almost interplanetary in nature, like a scene from Mars. The area is known as the fiercest area of geothermal activity and is steeped in ancient Maori culture, which you will discover when you visit.

What you need to know
- 20 minute slot at the Hell's Gate Mud Bath
- Access to the sulphur spas & plunge pool
- Allow 1.5 hours
- Every 30 minutes between 10am - 4:30pm
- Self drive to Hell's Gate Geothermal Reserve & Mud Spa, located at 351 State Highway 30 (10 mins drive out of Rotorua)
- Operates daily all year
- I'm wanting to do the mud bath but have no swimwear. Is short and top ok. You can definitely wear shorts and a top into the mud spa but please beware that they will get muddy and will need to be washed separately afterwards due to the geothermal properties.
- Child rate applies to 5-15yrs. Children under 5yrs are free of charge
- Minimum age for the Mud Bath is 2.5yrs
- Minimum age for the Sulphur Spa is 6 months
- There is plenty of parking available for cars & campervans at Hell's Gate reserve
- Please bring swimwear, towel & a change of clothes. Please note your swimwear and towels will have a sulphur smell after your experience. We recommend using old swimwear if you have it.
- Do not wear jewellery in the mud bath & sulphur spa - the minerals will tarnish most jewellery
- Your mud bath slot is limited to 20 minutes for health & safety reasons
