What you can expect
Hell's Gate Geothermal Walk provides an awe-inspiring journey through New Zealand's most active geothermal park, located in Rotorua. Step into the mystical realm of the Hell's Gate thermal Pprk, where you can experience the wonders of hot waterfalls, mud volcanoes and erupting geysers. This short walk takes between 1 to 1. 5 hours and you can choose either a guided or self-guided option.
On the guided geothermal walk around the Hell's Gate Geothermal Reserve, you'll encounter a mesmerising display of geysers, steaming fumaroles, and bubbling mud pools. Knowledgeable guides will lead you through this enchanting terrain, sharing fascinating insights into the geological marvels and Maori legends that make this place truly special. If choosing self-guided, you will be provided with a map upon entry to the Hell's Gate thermal park.
As you wander along wooden walkways, the geothermal activity on display is a sight to behold.

- From 1 October to 30 April, open daily from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM
- From 1 May to 30 September, open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM
- Allow 1.5 hours
- Guided tours depart at 10:30am & 2:30pm
- Self guided tours available every 30 minutes from 10:00am - 4:00pm
- Self drive to Hell's Gate Geothermal Reserve & Mud Spa, located at 351 State Highway 30 (10 mins drive out of Rotorua)
- Operates daily all year
- Child rate applies to 5-15yrs. Children under 5yrs are free of charge
- Maori carving is available to everyone aged 12yrs+
- Guided walks of the geothermal reserve run daily at 10:30am & 2:30pm
- There is plenty of parking available for cars & campervans at Hell's Gate reserve
- The geothermal walk is wheelchair accessible
- Complimentary shuttle pick-up and drop-off, available from within the Rotorua central area. Please advise your preferred pick-up option at the time of booking.
- Pick-up Rotorua 9:50am, Depart Hell’s Gate 1:30pm
- Pick-up Rotorua 1:50pm, Depart Hell’s Gate 5:30pm
- Please note that when you book a shuttle pick-up, you are automatically booked on the corresponding return service.
