This experience includes entry to the geothermal reserve, bathing in the famous Hell's Gate Mud Bath and a healing soak in the Sulphur Spas.
To start your experience, immerse yourself in an interactive geothermal walk around the renowned Hell's Gate Geothermal Reserve, a place of ancient Maori legends and breathtaking geysers, geothermal pools, and bubbling mud volcanoes.
You will have the choice to take a self guided walk or join a free interactive guided tour (conducted daily) around Hell’s Gate – New Zealand’s most active geothermal park. This amazing landscape will captivate your imagination as it bubbles with heat and history. The complimentary Maori carving area lets you leave with a little piece of Maori culture.
Next, indulge in ultimate relaxation with a luxurious Hell's Gate Mud Bath, a signature 20 minute experience that will leave you feeling rejuvenated and revitalized. The unique geothermal mud is enriched with minerals, renowned for its therapeutic and detoxifying properties.

What you need to know
- 1.5 hour guided tour or 1 hour self guided walk of the geothermal park
- A map is provided for self-guided walks
- Complimentary Maori carving area
- 20 minute slot at the Hell's Gate Mud Bath
- Access to the sulphur spas & plunge pool
- Allow 3 hours
- Every 30 minutes between 10am - 3:30pm (guided walks are available at 10:30am & 2:30pm daily)
- Self drive to Hell's Gate Geothermal Reserve & Mud Spa, located at 351 State Highway 30 (10 mins drive out of Rotorua)
- Operates daily all year
- Child rate applies to 5-15yrs. Children under 5yrs are free of charge
- Minimum age for the Mud Bath is 2.5yrs
- Minimum age for the Sulphur Spa is 6 months
- Maori carving is available to everyone aged 12yrs+
- Please bring swimwear, towel & a change of clothes. Please note your swimwear and towels will have a sulphur smell after your experience. We recommend using old swimwear if you have it.
- Do not wear jewellery in the mud bath & sulphur spa - the minerals will tarnish most jewellery
- Your mud bath slot is limited to 20 minutes for health & safety reasons
- Guided walks of the geothermal reserve run daily at 10:30am & 2:30pm in summer only (Oct-Apr)
- Change your booking up to 48 hours before the start time of your experience
- Changes are not permitted within 48 hours of your experience
- Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience
