Experience the colourful geothermal landscape of Wai O Tapu Thermal Wonderland, one of Rotorua’s signature sights. Shaped over hundreds of thousands of years, this area sits on an 18 sq km active geothermal field. This self-guided walk leads past steaming vents, mineral terraces and vivid pools, with clear signage that explains the science and stories behind each feature. At wai o tapu you’ll see why it ranks among the must-do Rotorua attractions.
Your ticket includes access to the entire geothermal park and entry to the Lady Knox Geyser presentation. The geyser can reach up to 20 metres. Arrive early for the best view.
Tracks vary in length, so you can set an easy pace and spend one to two hours exploring. Clear paths, lookouts and signage help you enjoy the terrain safely and make the most of your visit.
Finish at the Mud Pool near the exit. It is the largest mud pool in New Zealand and sits on the site of a former mud volcano that was worn away by erosion in the 1920s. The constant bubbling and bursts make a fitting finale.
