Everything about this trip was amazing - from the visitor centre, to the bus ride up to the observatory accompanied by space tunes, to the awesome night sky. The staff were amazing, really knowledgeable and engaging and the time flew by. It was the best experience and I would thoroughly recommend it!

The most popular experience available at Dark Sky Project is the Summit Experience. This is a breathtaking tour that takes place at the world renowned astronomical University of Canterbury's Mt John Observatory. On the tour, you are immersed in the surrounds and the night sky as you use sophisticated telescopes to view the night sky. The expert astronomy guides share the science and stories of the skies with you. If the weather is not suitable for this outdoor experience, you can to enjoy the Dark Sky Indoor experience instead.

Crater Experience Taking place at the Cowan's Observatory you will improve your knowledge of the Southern Skies in the purpose built observatory. This is a great introduction to stargazing and suitable for children five years and over. The observatory is built inside a crater which offers you maximum wind protection and minimum light pollution. The astronomy guides will discuss the Southern Skies with you as you take it all in through the powerful optical telescopes. If the weather is not suitable for this outdoor experience you will be able to enjoy the Dark Sky Indoor experience instead.
Dark Sky Experience Taking place at the Dark Sky Project Base you will go on a journey of 13.8 billion years as you take a guided multimedia voyage through space and time. The Dark Sky Experience mixes Maori heritage with a multimedia installation, creating a 'Big Bang' of awe and inspiration. This is a world first, indoor experience, departing hourly in English, Chinese and Japanese.
