Discover the best of Kayaking

Milford Sound, known to Māori as Piopiotahi, is best felt at water level, and nobody has been doing that longer than Rosco's Milford Kayaks. Founded in 1991, Rosco's remains New Zealand's original and longest running Milford Sound sea kayak operator, running double kayaks with foot operated rudders out onto the fiord below Mitre Peak. Every trip supplies full paddling gear, polypro layers, fleece, a neoprene spray deck, paddle jacket and dry bags, so the only decision is what time of day you want to be on the water.

Sunriser Classic

The Sunriser Classic with Rosco's Kayak Tours is the most popular way to see Milford Sound from a kayak, a big loop of the fiord departing between 7.30am and 10am depending on the season, timed for the calmest winds of the day. Over 3.5 hours and 10 kilometres of paddling you take in the sound's highlights below the sheer granite walls, with no previous kayaking experience required. The minimum age is 14, and anyone under 18 must share a kayak with an adult. Allow 3.5 hours, from $205 NZD.

Twilighter, Wind and Waves

The Twilighter trades sunrise calm for a livelier afternoon paddle, departing Deepwater Basin at 4pm once the day cruise ships have cleared out and the fiord is left to kayakers alone. The route heads out to Stirling Falls, with the chance to surf your kayak on the afternoon wind waves if conditions allow, before gliding back to base as the light turns to twilight over the cliffs. Allow 3.5 to 4 hours, from $290 NZD.

Day Safari from Te Anau

The Day Safari is built for anyone based in Te Anau rather than Milford itself, bundling return transport along the Milford Road into the kayaking trip. Your guide points out the highlights of the drive on the way in, departing Te Anau between 6.45am and 7.45am depending on sunrise, before the same 3.5 hour, 10 kilometre paddle around the sound. Minimum age 14, no experience required. Allow a full day including transfers, from $259 NZD.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need kayaking experience for Milford Sound?

No, all three Rosco's trips are guided and suited to first time paddlers, with full safety gear and a briefing included before you launch from Deepwater Basin.

Which Milford Sound kayak trip has the best chance of calm water?

The Sunriser Classic departs earliest, between 7.30am and 10am depending on the season, timed specifically for the calmest winds of the day before the fiord's afternoon breeze picks up.

What is the minimum age for kayaking in Milford Sound?

The minimum age across Rosco's trips is 14 years old, and paddlers under 18 must share a double kayak with an adult.

Can I kayak Milford Sound if I am staying in Te Anau?

Yes, the Day Safari includes return transport from Te Anau along the Milford Road, so you do not need your own car or an overnight stay in Milford to join a kayaking trip.

What is included in a Rosco's kayak tour?

All specialist paddling gear is supplied, including polypro thermals, fleece layers, a neoprene spray deck, paddle jacket, buoyancy aid and dry bags, along with a stable double kayak with a foot operated rudder.

Local tip: book the Sunriser Classic if photos are the priority, the early light on Mitre Peak and the calm water make for the clearest reflections of the day before the wind and the cruise ship wakes arrive.

Book your Milford Sound kayaking trip above and see Piopiotahi the way Rosco's has been showing paddlers since 1991.
