This was a great tour and we saw lots of birds. Natasha our guide was very knowledgeable and made this a very enjoyable experience.

What you can expect

Explore a secluded area of Stewart Island on the Guided Wilderness Walk departing from the main wharf in Oban. This half-day experience begins with a scenic sea cruise from Oban to Oneke, a remote and untouched area of the island also known as "The Neck". Once you arrive, your local guide will lead you on a walk through native forests, rugged beaches and trails that showcase this historically significant area of Stewart Island.

During the Stewart Island wilderness walk, you’ll have the chance to spot native wildlife and hear engaging stories about the island’s Maori heritage and early European settlers. Your guide will share insights about local conservation efforts and how this unique environment is being preserved for future generations.

With small groups and exclusive access to the special area of Oneke, this guided walk offers a unique experience on Stewart Island. Following an afternoon spent enjoying some of New Zealand's native flora and fauna, you'll catch the return sea cruise back to Oban to continue your journey on Rakiura Stewart Island.

Excellent staff! Loved the experience and knowledge of the guide. Saw and heard many birds including the nearly extinct saddleback. The commitment and work involved to create and maintain this piece of paradise is amazing.
