Cruise just over two hours on Milford Sound after travelling the Milford Road from Queenstown in a small group glass roof Mercedes, where the scenery runs overhead as well as either side. Your driver guide talks you through Fiordland on the way in, and once you are on the water an onboard nature guide takes over, pointing out the waterfalls, the sheer cliffs rising straight out of the fiord, and the wildlife that lives along it.
Keep your eyes out for New Zealand fur seals hauled out on the rocks, bottlenose dolphins in the wake, and Fiordland crested penguins near the shore. Spacious indoor cabins and open viewing decks mean you can sit warm or stand out in the weather as the mood takes you, and a generous picnic lunch is included. Dress for changeable Fiordland weather, because the rain is what gets the waterfalls going.
