Activities to do in Hamilton

Hamilton is a metropolitan city located in the Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island. The city has a rich cultural mix and a population of 160,000 making it the fourth most populated city in New Zealand. Hamilton was initially established as an agricultural service centre but now due to increased growth the economy has greatly diversified.

The landscape of Hamilton was formed by the most recent eruption of the Lake Taupo volcano 1800 years ago which redirected the Waikato River to its current path, through the centre of Hamilton. The terrain is mainly flat with some low hills.

Arts and culture form an important part of Hamilton's city centre and with a vibrant mix of sophisticated bars and restaurant and the second largest shopping centre in the country, The Base. Hamilton is a great place to experience culture, great shopping and high quality food and drink. The city also boasts the beautiful sprawling public park of Hamilton Gardens with themed gardens from the Italian Renaissance to Japanese and traditional Maori styles. The city has all the attractions you would expect including the Hamilton Zoo, the Waikato Museum, Seddon Park and more.

Hamilton is an ideal base to explore the wider region and Central North Island.
