What you can expect

Experience the Auckland Bioluminescence Kayak Tour, a two-hour evening adventure where paddle strokes can reveal glowing trails of light. This kayaking tour takes place at Waiake or Okura depending on the tide, with guides leading you through calm coastal waters known for their natural “sea sparkle.” Suitable for beginners and families, the tour combines easy paddling with a chance to learn about bioluminescent plankton and their role in the marine ecosystem.

The evening begins with a welcome and safety briefing. Your guide provides a kayak, paddle and personal flotation device fitted with a safety light. After checking clothing and equipment, you head onto the water as darkness falls. Once in the lagoon, you will see the water come alive with a soft blue glow created by microscopic organisms. Fish darting past can leave streaks of light, and the swirl of your paddle sets off shimmering sparks beneath the surface.

Guides share insights into the science behind bioluminescence and point out the best spots where it is most visible. With little light pollution and calm conditions, this family friendly tour offers an intimate way to experience a rare natural phenomenon.
