What you can expect

Set off on a scenic cruise through the Bay of Islands in search of dolphins, whales, seals, birdlife and other marine wildlife. As one of only two operators licensed by the Department of Conservation to view marine mammals, our experienced crew will help you discover the incredible wildlife that calls these waters home.

Your cruise includes a 1.5-hour stop at Otehei Bay on Urupukapuka Island, where you'll learn about the region's unique marine sanctuary and the conservation work of Project Island Song to restore native ecosystems and birdlife.

You will also have time to explore the island at the beachfront, swimming and walk the established tracks and spot reintroduced native wildlife including tīeke (North Island saddleback), toutouwai (North Island robin), pāteke (brown teal), Wētāpunga (giant wētā) and more.

  • Operates in summer only (Oct-Apr)
  • Child rates apply (5-15yrs)
  • Infants (0-4yrs) travel free of charge
  • You can also depart from Russell rather than Paihia. Please let us know if this is the case by selecting from Russell when making your booking
  • Please dress comfortably & bring a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, warm layer, swimwear, towel & your camera
  • Light refreshments are available to purchase onboard
  • You can purchase lunch from the cafe at Otehei Bay, or you are welcome to bring your own picnic
  • Marine mammal viewing guarantee - this cruise has a 90% success rate of viewing marine mammals, however if no marine mammals are spotted you can cruise again for free.

This was a fantastic experience and the crew of the Dolphin Explorer were fabulous. We thoroughly enjoyed this day and would do it again.
