Discover one of the world’s most scenic rail experiences aboard the TranzAlpine, a breathtaking train journey through New Zealand's Southern Alps. Travelling between Christchurch and Greymouth, this 5-hour ride offers spectacular views of Canterbury’s rolling plains, deep river gorges, alpine peaks and native forest. With spacious seating, panoramic windows and an open-air carriage, the TranzAlpine provides a fantastic viewing experience while travelling along one of New Zealand's most scenic railways.
On the journey from Christchurch to Greymouth, you’ll cross the heart of the South Island on the scenic Midland Line. The Midland Line follows a historic Maori trail over the spine of the South Island, with jaw-dropping scenery throughout. Upon reaching Greymouth, enjoy exploring this charming West Coast hub, packed with local history and rugged beaches. Or from Greymouth, start your onward journey down the West Coast to glacier country.
Enhance your journey from Christchurch to Greymouth with the Scenic Plus upgrade, which includes a regionally inspired meal and drinks served at your seat.
Alternatively, you can opt for a scenic day trip from Christchurch to to Arthur's Pass. Surrounded by dramatic peaks and walking tracks, this alpine village is ideal for nature lovers - look out for the cheeky Kea (alpine parrot) at the Arthur's Pass cafe! After exploring, simply hop back on the afternoon train returning to Christchurch. Whether heading coast-to-coast or staying in the mountains, the TranzAlpine promises a memorable South Island experience.

- Does the TranzAlpine train do a return journey from Christchurch? Yes, the TranzAlpine train offers return journeys from Christchurch to Greymouth and back. You can choose to return the same day or stay overnight and return on a different date.
- Can I travel one way from Greymouth to Christchurch on the TranzAlpine? Yes, one-way TranzAlpine train journeys are available from Greymouth to Christchurch, as well as from Christchurch to Greymouth.
- How do I choose a different return date to Christchurch on the TranzAlpine? If you would like to return to Christchurch on a different date, you can book two one-way TranzAlpine tickets.
- Can we break the TranzAlpine journey in Greymouth and return the following day? Yes, you can stay overnight in Greymouth and return to Christchurch the following day or on another date, subject to availability.
- Can I take a suitcase on the TranzAlpine train? Yes, you can take luggage such as a suitcase on the TranzAlpine train. Luggage allowances may apply, so it is best to check the current baggage guidelines when booking.
- Child rates apply (0-15yrs)
- Christchurch to Arthur’s Pass Day Experience – be sure to be at the station in time for the 4:35pm train back to Christchurch
- Cafe available onboard to purchase food and drinks
- If selecting the Christchurch–Greymouth return option, please let us know in the additional notes if you are planning to return on a different date
