Description
"Sunny Dunedin," as the heritage filled Otago Peninsula town is known, is one of a kind. Established as a result of volcanic activity, Dunedin is the oldest city in New Zealand filled with exemplary historical architecture. There is so much to see of the surrounding rugged coastline laden with picturesque scenery and remarkable wildlife. Lined with beautiful white sand and crisp waters, the many beaches should be on your 'must do' list when you are visiting Dunedin. Join this half-day tour to experience the best of the peninsula hotspots loaded with striking views starring the bays and beaches.
The first stop is Signal Hill Lookout where you will enjoy virtually a birds-eye view of Dunedin and its surroundings. On succession from Signal Hill, marvel at the world's steepest street, Baldwin Street, as well as the Historic Dunedin Railway Station before embarking on the coastal road to the Peninsula.
Be mesmerised by the postcard worthy stretch of coast and hear about the volcanic origin of Dunedin before checking out the remote southern parts of the headland. Visit Tidal Inlets, a birdwatcher's paradise, en route to Portobello, Otago Peninsula's main township. Keep your eyes peeled for kingfishers, herons and other impressive marine birdlife as you learn about the interesting intricacies of the present ecosystem.
Visit a wildlife reserve and spend time seeking the rarest sea lion in the world, the NZ sea lion. Admire one of Otago Peninsula's most beautiful beaches, scattered with basalt rock formations. Revitalise yourself by taking off your shoes and immerse your feet in the sand before dipping your toes into the refreshing salt water, if you're brave enough! Leave the beach behind and head for Port Chalmers via the low road.
