UNDERSTANDING THE RISKS OF ADVENTURE TOURISM EXPERIENCES

I accept that this activity inherently involves risks and potential hazards. All activities in the country of New Zealand can be subject to natural hazards including potential atmospheric, land or water related occurrences (landslides, earthquakes, tsunami, volcanic, storms, flooding, avalanche, rock, or ice fall). Specifically in regards to adventure activities, some of the risks and hazards involved can include, but are not limited to:

  • Skydiving: Risks include equipment failure, adverse weather conditions, and the possibility of hard landings.
  • Jet Boating: Potential hazards include high-speed manoeuvres leading to collisions or passengers being thrown from the boat, and the risk of hitting submerged objects.
  • Snowsports: For all snowsports, such as skiing, snowboarding, heli-skiing, snowmobiling, snow bikes and snowshoeing, hazards include avalanches, collisions with other skiers or objects, equipment failure, lack of training and the risk of falls or injuries due to uneven terrain.
  • Scuba Diving: Risks involve slipping and falling on deck, equipment failure, strong currents, waves and surges, collisions with rocks or other vessels, cold water temperatures, bites and stings from wild marine life.
  • White Water Rafting and Black Water Rafting: Risks involve capsizing, falling out of the raft, collisions with rocks or other obstacles in the river, flooding of caves and rapid currents.
  • Bungy Jumping: Main risks include equipment malfunction, improper harness attachment, and the physical strain of the sudden stop at the end of the jump.
  • Hiking and Guided Walks: Potential hazards include adverse weather conditions, getting lost, wildlife encounters, and injuries from falls or uneven terrain.
  • Canyoning: Risks include slipping and falling on wet or uneven terrain, flash flooding, and injuries from jumps or rappels.
  • Mountain Biking: Hazards include falls, collisions with other bikers or obstacles, and mechanical failures of the bike.
  • Quad Biking: Risks involve overturning the vehicle, collisions with obstacles or other riders, and potential mechanical failures.
  • Paragliding and Hang Gliding: Main hazards include equipment failure, adverse weather conditions, and the risk of hard landings.
  • Jet boat: Risks include the high-speed manoeuvres and potential for collisions or falls from the boat.
  • Kayaking: Potential hazards include changing weather conditions, capsizing, being hit by other watercraft and the physical demands of paddling and risk of drowning, especially in rough waters.
  • Helicopter Flights and Fixed Wing Scenic Plane Flights: Risks involve adverse weather conditions, mechanical failures, and potential hard landings.  
  • Downhill Ball Riding: Risks and hazards include, but are not limited to, abrasions, lacerations or other injuries from riding in the ball, aspiration inside the ball, entrapment in the ball, collision inside the ball, moving vehicles, slips and falls
  • High Ropes and Abseiling: Risks of serious harm from injuries including but not limited to dislocations, fractures, lacerations, bumps, bruises, cuts, chipped teeth, sprains, fatigue.
  • Ziplining and Canopy Tours: Risks include vehicle collisions, falls from heights of up to 50 metres, equipment failure, collision on the ziplines, risk of fingers, hands, hair or clothing getting caught in moving zip line trolleys, exposure-related issues due to weather conditions, slips, trips and falls, falling objects from above (such as tree branches), suspension trauma.

I am aware that participating in adventure activities offered by the adventure experience operator can be hazardous if they are not conducted with care, control and responsibility. I acknowledge that these risks could result in my injury (physical or mental) or even death.
