Exploring Lake Wanaka, New Zealand

Nestled in the heart of a glacier carved basin amid snow-capped peaks is the town of Wanaka. The world’s first lifestyle reserve it offers visitors and residents the freedom to explore the surrounding region on their own terms.
Known for the vast lake that reaches out from the centre of the town, Wanaka is the ideal place to visit if you like outdoors adventures and lazy afternoons by the water.
While many opt to make camp in neighbouring Queenstown I urge you to consider basing yourself away from the tourism driven adventure capital of the south, and instead spend your time getting to know the real middle earth.
What to know why? Take a little look below.
At 42km in length and 311m in depth Lake Wanaka is one of the most iconic features of New Zealand’s south. Sheltered by the indomitable peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park the lake is a product of the vast glacial erosion that ripped through the landscape long ago. With the town of Wanaka encompassing only a small fraction of the lake’s edge, there’s miles of unfettered shoreline left to explore.
Join the Locals At Sticky Forest
Expertly designed the trails at Sticky Forest provide the opportunity to partake in one of Wanaka’s most iconic pursuits. Mountain biking. This fun network of undulating tracks takes in the best of the town’s exotic pine forest. Choose from the technical switchbacks of Stumpy and Yumpts, the beautiful berms of Venus or head out to Crankin' Fine's legendary uphill corkscrew. These trails are purpose built to be enjoyed by beginners and pros alike.

Kayaking on Lake Wanaka
If you’re looking for the chance to escape reality and soak in the natural surroundings then a kayak excursion is a must. Join the crew of Wanaka Kayak SUP & Sail for a guided trip on the water, or rent a kayak from their base on the beach and set off in search of adventure. On a still day the lake transforms into a mirror reflecting the alpine peaks and vibrant shores it provides picture perfect views a plenty.

Exploring At Speed
If the thought of paddle power makes your arms ache and you’re in the mood for high speed thrills, why not consider full or half day Jet Ski rental from Torque Marine? With the power to fly across the water the entire expanse of the lake becomes your playground, enabling you to explore every inlet and bay.
Explore The Region’s Tramping Tracks
If you’ve time on your hands and you feel like a little fresh air and fun, then make the most of Wanaka’s wealth of hiking trails. From short local walks along the lake’s edge to multi day tramps in neighbouring Mount Aspiring National Park there’s something for all ages and abilities.
Hike to the top of Mount Iron for an epic 360 degree view that encompasses the town, the Clutha River Basin and parts of the southern Alpine Range. Try local’s favourite the Outlet Track which follows the lake’s edge or head over to neighbouring Lake Hawea via the Hawea River Track.
A Winter Retreat
Voted as the southern hemisphere’s #1 ski town, Wanaka boasts the longest ski and snowboard runs in the district. For those looking to bypass the hustle and bustle on the slopes at Queenstown’s Remarkables Ski Area, Treble Cone is heaven on earth. With legendary off piste terrain and alpine views a plenty Wanaka will offer a memorable winter escape.
