Lake Tekapo sits 710 metres above sea level, with the township perched on the shores of a turquoise glacial lake. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, this peaceful alpine town is one of the most scenic places to visit in the South Island during winter. Clear night skies, snowy backdrops and a surprisingly wide range of winter activities make Tekapo a destination worth spending a few days in.
At Everything New Zealand, we help travellers discover, compare and book winter experiences across the country. Whether you’re planning a short stop on your South Island road trip or a relaxing mid-winter escape, Lake Tekapo is a great place to slow down and enjoy the alpine scenery.
What’s Lake Tekapo Like in Winter?
In winter, Lake Tekapo often receives regular snowfall, especially during July and August. Snow typically settles on the surrounding mountains, and the township itself usually sees a light dusting several times each winter. Regardless of the weather, the lake keeps its striking turquoise colour, caused by fine glacial sediment in the water.
Winter days in Tekapo are cold, but frosty mornings are often followed by crisp, sunny afternoons. Thanks to its location within the world’s largest Dark Sky Reserve, Tekapo also enjoys exceptionally clear skies in winter, making it one of the best stargazing spots in New Zealand.
Unlike the hustle and bustle of ski towns, Lake Tekapo offers a slower, more peaceful pace. It’s an ideal stop if you're looking to unwind, enjoy the scenery and visit some local highlights. Landmarks like the Church of the Good Shepherd, the Lake Tekapo Footbridge and the Mount John Summit are all easily accessible and look even more impressive with a snowy backdrop.
