Description
Queenstown is a great location for fly fishing, and if you’ve ever wanted to pick up the sport or improve your skills, a tour with Simon Wilkinson, fly fishing guide extraordinaire, is just the thing you need. You will be picked up at your accommodation in Queenstown at a time of your choosing and then embark on a one to two hour drive that will take you to a location suited to the river and weather conditions of the day.
Cast to sighted and stalked fish with a size range between three to five pounds, though that doesn’t prevent you from spotting and hooking into far bigger fish.
Some of the locations you may enjoy include verdant farmland, wide open spaces covered in tussock, alpine beech forests, spring creeks in mountainous areas, freestone and alluvial rivers and alpine lakes.
Serious anglers might want to depart as early as possible, arranging to be picked up at around 6:30am to 7:30am, in order to reserve great spots on good water bodies before other anglers appear.
Many rivers on which the tours are conducted can only be accessed by helicopter from Queenstown or Wanaka, and heli fly fishing trips can be organised should you want to fish in isolated backcountry locations.
