Guided Walks - Discover the Karangahake Gorge Tauranga
If the thought of combining a trekking tour with gold, dining, wine and art appeals to you, discovering the Karangahake Gorge is a must!
Your tour begins with an hour-long scenic drive around the edge of Tauranga Moana. This drive also takes you through the vivid Karangahake Gorge – an amazing sight that will leave you in awe. Next, you will enjoy a walk through the atmospheric miner’s tunnels and along swing bridges as you cross the Ohinemuri River. You will stretch your legs along the 2.5km gold miner’s trail (includes some stairs), before exploring the relics of the stamping batteries – once used to break the ore down for processing. Your friendly and experienced guide will tell you about the area and the largest industrial town in the early 20th Century.
After your morning of exploration, you will have the chance to enjoy a relaxing lunch and wine tasting (own expense) at a boutique winery. Next, travel to Waihi Village to see a fascinating modern, open cast, working mine, called Martha Mine. This will give you a chance to consider the difference between the old and new technologies used in mining.
On your way back to Tauranga, you will stop at the amazing and eccentric Katikati Mural Town. Learn about the fascinating history of the area, which has been captured in murals on walls, sculptures, carvings and weavings spanning all the way across the town. Here, you will have a chance to browse the shops and maybe even chat to the friendly locals.
