Maori Cultural Experience Rotorua
Maori Cultural Experience
It is no secret that New Zealand’s pre-European cultural heritage is truly fascinating. The amazing dynamics of the Māori tribal traditions and lores have been a favourite of historians (and history buffs) for centuries and the strong continuation of these cultural aspects into the modern day is truly a credit to the people of This beautiful country. Now you can experience the amazing Māori culture for yourself with the most awarded cultural experience in New Zealand!
Stepping foot inside the traditional Māori village re-enactment is like stepping back in time to an era when New Zealand tribes were developing, claiming land, forging alliances and exacting vendettas against enemies. The surrounding Tawa forest sets the atmosphere as you approach the village. Before entering, you meet the young, ambitious Uitara IV of the Ngati Tama people. The Ngati Tama greet you with their ancient welcoming ceremony – the Powhiri – before you walk into the bonfire-lit village. Once there, you will see time-honoured pastimes, such as ancient craft, fishing, weaving, tattooing and carving being conducted in the traditional manner. You will also witness the amazing traditional hunting techniques, weaponry displays and Māori warrior training.
In the meeting house located in the heart of the village, you will be entertained with celebrations and whaikorero (speeches) in honour of the young warrior Uitara, as he prepares to depart the village with his newfound leader. In honour of such a significant event, the Ngati Tama people will perform the exciting and intimidating war dance haka, waiataaringa (action songs), graceful poi and more.
You will be guests of honour at the wharekai (fully equipped dining room), where you will enjoy a traditional ‘hangi’ feast (foods cooked beneath the ground) as well as a sumptuous desert – all buffet style. As the stars make their presence known and you begin to forget which century you're in, you will finish the evening off by enjoying the poroporoaki (closing ceremony), which includes speeches and farewell songs. After this amazing 3.5 hour experience, you will be left with a new appreciation for the amazing Māori culture and their traditions, and maybe even a longing for times gone by.
