Description
This fabulous destination is Stewart Island – New Zealand's most sought after eco-tourism haven. The beautiful uncharted coastline grants the beholder a contrasting view of harsh rocky scenery, alongside stunning, golden sand beaches. The Island was granted the Māori name, Rakiura, meaning land of the glowing skies – so named because of the marvellous skyline at sunset and sunrise.
Within the beauty of Stewart Island, there is a necessary natural function – the densely covered hills and rocky outcrops give the local native fauna and flora the ideal habitat in which to flourish. This makes the Island such an essential part of New Zealand’s commendable and ongoing conservation efforts.
The beginning of your adventure will see you cruising along via catamaran – one of the more thrilling boating experiences available within the area; the catamaran you will board is fully equipped for comfort and enjoyment. The one-hour crossing of the Foveaux Strait allows you time to scan the glorious landscape for hidden wildlife, and this will leave you amazed at the abundance of marvellous marine and birdlife that occupies this part of New Zealand.
You will also enjoy the highly informative commentary as you cruise across the Strait. When you arrive at Stewart Island, your senses will be ignited by the awe inspiring sights and the stunning Paterson Inlet will leave you tingling with reverence. You have the option of exploring the Island though one of the ‘Village and Bays’ tours or guided walks – or alternatively, you can hire bikes, scooters or a rental car to explore on your own terms. When it comes to accommodation, your options are wide open. Stewart Island has all budgets covered – whether you’re backpacking or looking for a 5-star hotel – the Island has everything you need to ensure you visit is simply perfect.
