Travel from Auckland or Rotorua on a day trip through gorgeous scenery and amazing sights, finishing up with a magical glow worm viewing – truly a spectacular day out!During this trip, you will get to see the rolling green farmland of the Waikato and King Country regions. If you are departing from Auckland, you will see the historic location of a Māori land wars battle, Rangiriri, as well as the home to the Māori king, Ngaruawahia. Departing from Rotorua allows you to see the gorgeous Fitzgerald Glade and the cute little town of Tirau.
When you arrive at the quaint town of Waitomo, you will head over to the renowned Waitomo Glowworm Caves. As you make your way along the stalactites, stalagmites and other limestone formations of the cave, you will be amazed at the stunning beauty of these natural structures. Listening to the full commentary on the geological and historical significance of these caves will leave you informed and full of wonder. Then, it’s down to the subterranean cave – called the Glowworm Grotto – to see the real stars of the show.
The amazing glow worms, Arachnocampa luminosa, are only found in New Zealand, but here, they gather in their thousands, making for a truly resplendent sight. On your silent boat ride through the dark grotto, the sparkling constellations that the thousands of glow worms form will make your jaw drop with wonder.
After your brush with the beauty of the glow worms, you can relax at the Waitomo visitor complex, taking in the gorgeous scenery, enjoying lunch at the restaurant and chatting with other people about your experience. A buffet lunch can be pre-booked or you can select from the delicious café style meals (own expense) from the restaurant menu. Afterwards, you can enjoy the scenery on your journey back to Rotorua or Auckland.
