Description

Waimak River Riding Centre offers horse lovers and fun seekers a delightful horse trekking experience just 20 minutes from central Christchurch.

Located on the banks of the mighty Waimakariri River, Waimak River Riding Centre has access to superb horse trekking trails, making it the perfect base for exploring the Christchurch countryside on horseback. The trails meander through grassy plains, native bush and the flat river beds of the sparkling Waimakariri River, creating a perfect mix of riding options for beginners and advanced riders alike. The stunning views you will take in include the snow-capped Southern Alps, majestic beech tree bushland and a plethora of wildlife and sheep.

This 2 hour Falcon River Ride takes place in a riding group of an intimate size, allowing you to enjoy a personalised trip with expert guides to ensure your safety. The friendly staff at Waimak River Riding Centre are all professional and have your safety in mind, and the gorgeous horses you will use have all been trained to cater to beginners and advanced riders, meaning you can relax and fully enjoy yourself. Riding alongside the Waimakariri River, you will experience stunning views of the Southern Alps and surrounding Canterbury plains. Weather permitting, you will be also be guided through several river crossings throughout the trek, where you & your horse can enjoy the cool waters of the Waimakariri. A truly fantastic experience!

This is a relaxing, slow paced ride and is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness and ability. However, there is plenty of opportunity for some faster paced riding and the guides will split the group to best cater to your abilities.

Other Information

Please advise your weight and riding ability upon booking so a suitable horse can be allocated
Maximum weight is 90kg for beginners and 95kg for experienced riders
Minimum age is 12yrs (younger children allowed but will be walked or led)
Parking is available outside the entrance gate
The closest bus stops at the Belfast Tavern (The Peg) on the Main North Road (Blue line bus). It is 20 minutes walk from the bus stop to riding centre
All participants must arrive 30 minutes prior to departure time to allow for paper work, helmet fitting and a safety demonstration
Wet weather gear & warm gloves are provided when required
Please wear long trousers (jeans are ok) & comfortable sturdy footwear
Bring a camera & sunglasses

Hi do you require a vaccine pass to go horse riding ?

Thanks for your enquiry about Horse Riding at Rubicon Valley Horse Treks near Christchurch. Yes, I can confirm that at the time of writing (06/02/2022) the operator will require Vaccine Passes and they will be checked by the operator on check in. You will also be required to wear a mask during the check in process, but not on the horse ride itself.

Thank you for your question regarding the horse riding at Rubicon Valley Horse Treks. It depends on the day what the weather situation is, the operator will make a decision depending on the conditions they will try their best to maintain the trek.

If I am an experienced rider - comfortable with cantering - which ride would I be best suited to?

Also is the $40 for a return transfer to and from Christchurch?

The Christchurch return transfers are a bit tricky actually. They cost $40 per person but you have to book for 3 or more people so its a minimum of $120 for the transfers return. If you don't have a car then there is an Atomic Shuttle that leaves Christchurch at 7.15am and drops people at Springfield by 8.15am and the Rubicon horse guides will pick you up from there. The shuttle back leaves Springfield at 4.15pm and returns to Christchurch by 5.15pm. Cost is $60 return per person so its cheaper if you are booking this on your own.
