Description
Paddle through the ‘Sound of Silence’ on a guided kayaking tour with Doubtful Sound Kayak. Doubtful Sound is one of the largest fiords in the South Island of New Zealand, spanning 40 kilometres in length. Due to its remote location, exploring Doubtful Sound by kayak is a serene experience that showcases staggering scenery, beautiful waterfalls and Fiordland wildlife, all from water level.
Your Doubtful Sound kayaking tour begins with an early morning pick up in Te Anau, transferring you to Pearl Harbour, Manapouri. From here, enjoy a scenic cruise across Lake Manapouri and a coach transfer along Wilmot Pass Road, which takes you approximately 670 metres above sea level. At the top of Wilmot Pass you are rewarded with your first glimpse of Doubtful Sound, so don’t forget your camera! Travelling to Doubtful Sound is a journey in itself and a fantastic introduction to Fiordland scenery & history.
After arriving at Deep Cove in Doubtful Sound, hop aboard your double sea kayaks, which are complete with steering rudders. Embark on your 3.5 hour kayaking adventure together with your Doubtful Sound Kayak guide and discover more about the fiord’s history, geology, flora and fauna. Stop for a break under the dramatic Commander Peak, where you can enjoy your picnic lunch and a complimentary hot drink. The second half of your kayaking trip takes you deeper into the Hall Arm of Doubtful Sound, where you can weave in and out of secluded coves and marvel at views of the 1500m Mount Danae. You are then transported by water taxi back to Deep Cove to start the return journey to Te Anau.
